Jude Schlotzhauer - "Calling the Gods"
Winner of the 1998 Best in Show Award, Jude Schlotzhauer’s solo exhibition this year,
Calling the Gods.
From the earliest civilizations to the present, the human spirit has searched the mysteries of life, death, and
the spirit world. The art of ancient cultures speaks to us across time, its power and intrigue undiminished by
the spaces between out world and theirs. Drawing from images of the past, my artwork explores the universal experience;
the journey of the human spirit.
Themes of passages, vessels, dreams and transformation reoccur throughout my work. Egypt is a compelling influence,
with its colorful and ritualistic images of interactions between gods and "time travelers"; and its mummies,
wrapped in cocoons, secretting miraculous changes.
It is the unknown which entices the artist to expression. As we “call the gods” to guide us into the unseen, only
the imagination can give form to the time-honored mysteries of life. This is the realm my artwork ventures to explore. |
The Juror
Maurine Littleton
is the owner and director of Maurine Littleton Gallery in Washington DC. Specializing in contemporary art in glass and ceramics, and
vitreographic prints, the gallery shows exclusively work by the top fine art glass artists in the world including
Dale Chihuly and Harvey Littleton. "One of the top ten galleries in Washington DC."
Of the show, Ms. Littleton said: My choices for awards were often selected for multiple reasons, some quite subjective.
These works either impressed me with their technical virtuosity, or harmonious use of color, materials, forms,
surface treatments; or perhaps they expressed some mystery, spirit or idea. Of the multiple works submitted by
an artist, I usually found the simplest work to be their best.
I was pleased to find many artists had risked pushing their ideas and materials beyond what was safe. I appreciated
the efforts extended by the guild members in producing this show. |
